Literature Committee Report 10-15-06

First of all, I’d like to thank all of you for the get well card with everyone’s signature from the July meeting. I kept it on my refrigerator while I was recuperating and it helped me so much not to fall into self-pity and worry. Also, thanks to everyone who called and prayed and thought of me and my family.

At the literature committee meeting yesterday, we had 6 in attendance and I’d like for them to stand and be recognized. We had a lively and informative meeting. I re-did the literature committee display a few months ago, concentrating on pamphlet design and designation because I realized that many AA’s with years in service don’t know about this. Of course, the day after I finished it, I received the new PO Box 459, which included an article about the new pamphlet design coming out next year.

Basically, recovery pamphlets have a banner or flag on the front. Service materials have steps; unity has steps and a square and those for professionals are in bold colors with no design. It seems that if we could encourage groups to display literature with these designations noted, members could locate them more easily and possibly would read them more. Also, for the newcomer, the system can cut down on confusion and help to inform them about all aspects of AA.

Jim S. talked about chairing meetings and taking topics from As Bill Sees It, which has an index chocked full of potential topics. Since the book that the passages are taken from are referenced at the bottom of the page, it’s very easy to then go to that book and read more on the subject. We also observed that more books are sold when meeting topics are taken from various pieces of literature and interest in the history books go up when they are referenced and discussed.

Each of the districts at the committee meeting reported that they are busy providing literature and most are giving Big Books to new members who can’t afford to buy their own. Barb B. states that GSO has a new extension for the existing literature racks that attaches to it. Books can be displayed in the extensions.

I have asked the committee to get a copy of the old and new pamphlet “The AA Group” so we can start looking over the changes made in it and we will discuss that at our next area meeting. Thanks to all of you for allowing me to serve.

In loving AA service,

Leigh Ann Johnson,

Literature Committee Chairman
